How to Apply for a Truck Driving License and Renewal Procedures.

 

To drive a truck legally in Thailand, you are required to hold a Type 2 Driving License (Truck License) issued by the Department of Land Transport (DLT). If you wish to apply for a new license or renew an existing one, you can follow the procedures outlined below.

 

1. How to Apply for a New Truck Driving License

Qualifications of Applicants

✅ At least 20 years of age

✅ Holding a private car driving license (Type 1) for not less than 1 year

✅ In good physical health, with no serious illnesses that could interfere with driving

✅ Must complete training and pass tests conducted by the Department of Land Transport

 

Required Documents

📌 Original national ID card

📌 Medical certificate (issued within the last 1 month)

📌 Private car driving license (Type 1) held for at least 1 year

 

Steps to Apply for a Truck Driving License

1️⃣ Attend a theory course (traffic laws and safety) for no less than 5 hours

2️⃣ Take a physical fitness test , including color vision, reaction to sound, and brake response ability

3️⃣ Complete a written exam via the E-exam system (a minimum score of 90% is required)

4️⃣ Take a practical driving test at the DLT’s test field, including reverse parking, narrow-lane driving, and controlling the truck on a slope

5️⃣ If all tests are passed, pay the license fee and receive a temporary truck driving license (valid for 2 years)

 

 

2. How to Renew a Truck Driving License

When your temporary truck driving license reaches its 2-year validity, you can apply to renew it for a 5-year license by following these steps:

 

Required Documents

📌 Original national ID card

📌 Existing truck driving license

📌 Medical certificate (issued within the last 1 month)

 

Renewal Process

1️⃣ Attend a traffic laws and safety training course for no less than 1 hour

2️⃣ Take a physical fitness test

3️⃣ Pay the renewal fee (approximately 505 THB)

4️⃣ Receive the 5-year truck driving license

 

If your license has expired for more than 1 year, you must retake the written exam.
If it has expired for more than 3 years, you are required to retake the practical driving test as well.

 

Obtaining a truck driving license requires that you first hold a private car driving license. You must complete training and pass both the written and practical exams. For renewals, you are required to attend a training session and undergo a physical fitness test. If your license has expired for more than 1 year, some parts of the exam may need to be retaken.
